In this paper we review the chronometric evidence for the colonization of southeast Polynesia (defined here as Mangareva, the Pitcairn Group, and Easter Island), relying also on stratigraphic context as well as island, archipelago, and regional settlement patterns to solidly propose a pre--A.D.1000 colonization of all volcanic island groups. We will demonstrate that several of the crucial earlier dates are either ignored or misinterpreted by the proponents of late colonization.
