Self-awareness, self-expression, constructive behavior and communication skills are fundamental to successful behavioral change for inmates in correctional institutions. Without interventions to promote such change, most treatment programs prove to be unsuccessful. The arts have gained increased attention as being effective tools for overcoming obstacles to, and promoting, learning and self-awareness. This article will introduce what has been, and will be, an effective model to bring about healthy change in those who participate. Much of the proposed program will rely on the visual and expressive arts. The first part of this article will explain why introducing the arts is not only desirable, but natural given the setting, and inmates' propensity for creative expression. The next part will present the program's predecessors and the development of the Interdisciplinary Wellness Arts Education (IWAE) program. The article will conclude with a proposed application of this model in a juvenile detention facility in rural Florida.
