Well-being in school can serve as an important source for adolescents’ development. Thus, the article tries to answer questions about the time course of scholastic well-being during secondary education and about the antecedents of student well-being. First, the term „well-being in school”, its functions and its predictors are introduced. Second, two studies about adolescents’ well-being in school are presented. Results show that the components of scholastic well-being change during adolescence, primarily a change for the worse, and that the change patterns are different for girls and boys. Emotional variables as well as indicators of instruction, and the quality of relationships in the classroom influence student well-being. Third, some implications for educational practice are suggested.
