Stephen Dedalus’ singing of “Little Harry Hughes,” an anti-Semitic ballad, to Leopold Bloom at the climax of their meeting and perhaps of the book is a seemingly uncharacteristic attack on his undeserving, kindly host. It interrupts the arc of their growing intimacy, complicates our reading of Stephen, and confounds and confuses any satisfactory resolution to their relationship. It also offers a new way of thinking about why Stephen refuses Bloom’s offer to spend the night and perhaps become a boarder in his home.
