In 1983 a decision was made to involve conservation specialists in the ab initio technical (site and artefact management) assessment of an important new class of archaeological site. When the decision to excavate the site was eventually made, conservators were also invited to join subsequent phases of the project-not just to provide traditional conservation expertise but also for archaeological reasons. In the latter instance this involved the application of the expertise of conservation staff in assisting with an understanding of site formation processes and in then pursuing problem-oriented archaeological inquiry about the people once involved with the material remains. With inquiry into the ‘human’ elements of the program finished, the archaeologist who has led the project now assesses the results of a 14 year marriage of archaeologists and conservators for both technical and archaeological purposes.
