Africa (URTNA) celebrated its thirtieth anniversary with an awards gala in Nairobi, Kenya. Among the awards given out were the URTNA Cultural Ambassador Awards. Citations and trophies were presented to African artists featured over the years in URTNA's exchange programme and whose music had made a positive socio-cultural impact across Africa. Among the recipients of the awards were two musicians from Kenya, namely Paul Mazera Mwachupa and Daudi Masika Kabaka. They were honoured by the continental body for their efforts in promoting African culture in line with URTNA's goals. In view of the continent recognising the importance of urban popular music, the setting up of URTNA, and the continental body's recognition of the significant part that Kenya had played by giving two awards to Kenyans, I realised that this was an area that required more serious attention and which, hitherto, had not been studied critically. It was in this light that I conceived this study in the field of urban ethnomusicology.
