The Alexandrian cult of Cyrus and John at Menouthis was not inaugurated by St Cyril (412-444) but arose later probably under the patronage of the Monastery of the Metanoia at Canope. The hagiographic works devoted to Cyrus and John, above all the Synaxarium of Constantinople, record early disagreements concerning the location of the relics (St Mark’s or Menouthis), the nature of the saints (doctors or miracle-workers) and the identity of the promoter of their cult (Theophilus or Cyril). The literary talent of Sophronius of Jerusalem led to the cause of Menouthis prevailing.
