Critical industrial sociology traditionally had its focus on the analysis of taylorism and the technical „degradation of work“, extending from G. Friedmann to H. Braverman and the more recent contributions of G. Ritzer, N. Postman and J. Rifkin. This paper argues that, given the expansion of qualified service and knowledge occupations, such a perspective can no longer give sufficient orientation for a critique of contemporary forms of work. What appears much more important, is a critique of the myths and ideologies surrounding knowledge and service work, which Voß and Pongratz have described in their well known concept of the „employee-entrepreneur“. The paper sketches basic lines of such a perspective.
