Urban environmental issues originate from the relationship between human settlements and their natural support. Usually known as Brown Agenda, these issues jeopardize the cities’ natural resources and lead to the loss of the urban population’s quality of life. This paper aims to contribute to the understanding of the complexity of urban environmental problems, in order to assist the formulation of public policies that are committed with fair and balanced social and environmental conditions. The chosen methodology was the elaboration of the history of the institutionalization of urban and environmental issues, as well as research on the main causes of contemporary social and environmental conflicts in an urban context. Finally, this paper systematizes the main urban environmental problems, emphasizing their connectivity.
