Introductory Note. Theory and Practice publishes this translation as a memorial tribute to Felix Salzer , who died on August 10, 1986. Salzer wrote the article when he was a young man of twenty-five; it originally appeared in the April 1930 issue of the Zeitschrift fur Musikwissenschaft.1 He had received his doctorate in musicology from the University of Vienna four years earlier, in 1926. At the time he wrote the article, he was studying theory and composition with Hans Weisse, one of Heinrich Schenker 's most important students. Salzer began his studies with Schenker in the fall of 1931, after Weisse left Vienna for the David Mannes Music School in New York.
