In recent years a good deal of insight has been gained into the neural processes underlying the brain’s ability to synthesize information from different sensory modalities. Although multisensory integration is likely to be ongoing in many different areas of the brain simultaneously, the one area in which this process can be most extensively explored is the superior colliculus (SC). This chapter demonstrates the close interplay between areas of association cortex and the SC. Such circuits are not only a likely substrate for the modulation of subcortical processes by ‘cognitive’ factors (e.g., attention, motivation, etc.) but may also serve as the conduit through which experience can shape sensory processing in the SC, both during development and in adulthood.
