Problems in the Conservation and Preservation of Rock Art

Abstract

A note stressing the importance of protecting rock carvings and paintings. The situation in the United States is described, with a summary of the problems of climate, bacteria, lichen, water runoff, mineral accretions, detachment of rock, and graffiti. The need to recognize the value of rock art and to combat vandalism is emphasized.
