Abstract

Adolf von Harnacks university-wide lecture on the essence of Christianity was held in Berlin in the winter semester of 1899/1900. This work contains the text of the last edition in 1929 which Harnack himself oversaw as well as an appendix with significant, previously unnoticed texts associated with these lectures and some material from Harnacks unpublished works. The afterword describes the significance of this work within Harnacks entire works and explains its importance for current debates.Claus-Dieter Osthövener, the editor, offers a critical edition that includes a long appendix with notes, manuscript details prefaces to various early editions, and most importantly, a comprehensive subject index.
