This chapter considers learning as an occupation in which we engage throughout life. Initial learning is innate, prompted by the need to survive. Youngsters learn through play as curiosity encourages them to explore the environment under the guidance of parents. In the academic environment, students of the professions are guided towards developing skills for autonomous learning in order to prepare them for working as an autonomous practitioner. Learning strategies include experiential learning and taking the time to reflect on learning activities. The development of professional competence comes in different phases, from novice to expert. Competence to learn is integral to competence to practise and must continue to feature highly throughout professional life. Given the frequency of changes in the external environment, learning to work autonomously, to be flexible and manage transitions is seen as an investment for future employment.
