International service by students is gaining greater attention at collegesand universities around the world. Some research has examinedthe effects of international service for students, but relatively fewstudies have examined outcomes for host communities and sponsoringorganizations, including colleges and universities. Beginningwith an examination of theoretical and empirical research from thefields of international volunteerism, international service-learning,and international study abroad, this article proposes a frameworkfor inquiry on international service programs. It suggests that differencesin outcomes for students, host communities, and homecolleges and universities are the result of variations in individual andinstitutional characteristics and service activities. Finally, the articleconsiders implications for future research, including hypotheses andresearch designs to test differences across programs and educationalinstitutions.
