This chapter presents research that has focused on the question of language and sexual identities. This question has largely been concerned with the place of language in such activities as the naming of particular behaviors, the social policing of sexual conduct, the emergence of power and other social relations with regard to sexualities and sexual activity, the constitution of normativity and taboo, and presenting the self (or positioning others) as a particular kind of person in a particular kind of socially informed time and space. Recent research on language and sexual identities has addressed these questions largely from the perspective that sexual identities (and sexuality more broadly) lie at the nexus of essentialist and social constructivist ideas about the nature of sociolinguistic life.
