This chapter provides an overview of the primary phonetic features that can index gender, sexuality, and the meanings that constitute them; selectively reviews classic and current literature on the sociophonetics of gender and sexuality; and highlights important theoretical issues relating to the enterprise of studying gender and sexuality from a sociophonetic perspective. Each major domain of linguistic sound – pitch and intonation, vowels, consonants, and voice quality – is discussed in turn. The chapter concludes by identifying important new directions in the study of the sociophonetics of gender and sexuality, including rhythm, transgender speech, intragender difference, affect, and embodiment.
