Control charts are used to measure and understand the variability of a process. By reducing this variability, we achieve quality improvement. If the observed process variability can be traced to an assignable cause, our goal is to identify and remove that cause as soon as possible. This chapter explains how to interpret the process this way by using control charts. The control chart is an excellent tool to monitor the process, identify assignable causes in the process, and direct the process. The chapter looks at the different kinds of control charts that are available to chart a process. They can be divided into two categories: variable control charts and attribute control charts. Variable control charts are used to evaluate variation in a process where the measurement is a variable. The chapter discusses the choice of deciding which chart to use depends on the problem.
