To help foreign students adjust to the academic environ ment, the University of California-Davis Library devel oped a program with a dual emphasis: (1) teaching inter national students how to find and use library information and (2) educating library staff to recognize/understand the special needs of these patrons. The Davis program adopted a personalized instructional approach (i.e., library orien tation in small groups, a librarian '6on call service). Staff education included briefings on foreign student issues and cultural awareness workshops. Results show acceptance of and support for the program. The Davis library orienta tion/instruction model is recommended for universities with small to moderate foreign enrollment (under one thousand students or under 4 percent of total enrollment).
