Intimate partner violence is a major public health problem that is associated with a range of mental health problems. There is a high prevalence of intimate partner violence victimisation among people with mental disorders but violence is under-detected by mental health professionals. There is a limited evidence base on interventions to address the intimate partner violence experienced by people with mental disorders. However, the introduction of routine enquiry about intimate partner violence into mental health services may start to address problems of poor identification and care where healthcare professionals are trained to respond safely.
