The subject of art (encompassing music, painting, literature, et cetera) is addressed frequently, and occasionally at length, in the work of Alexander Bain (1818–1903), a leading mid-Victorian psychologist who integrated association-ist philosophy of mind with new knowledge of anatomy and physiology (see Source 6). His work was widely read in Britain and America in the second half of the nineteenth century, including by thinkers like William James (1842–1910) who were closely associated with the modernist turn in our understanding of language and subjectivity. Bain wrote important studies of English grammar, composition, and rhetoric, full of serious pedagogical intent, which contained passages on poetry and prose and the cultivation of style, while his philosophical and psychological writing discussed art through the prism of thought and feeling.
