Abstract The history of psychology is, to some extent, the story of a never-ending struggle against folk psychology. In a way, folk psychology provides us with ready-made answers to many of the questions we ask in science. As a consequence, everybody who shares a particular system of folk psychology convictions and beliefs is an expert in psychological matters. People already know the answers to the questions we pose and, therefore, they find much of our scientific effort redundant and superfluous.
