As cities across the globe continue to accept more people, the challenge of understanding how density and crowding affect wellbeing becomes paramount. This chapter begins by defining key terms in the relationship between urban spatial density and mental wellbeing. The concept of intensity is introduced as a kind of temporary density with positive and negative consequences for wellbeing. State‐of‐the‐art research is then presented, empirically demonstrating the above relationship and outlining the often‐deleterious links between higher spatial density/crowding and illbeing. The final section highlights practical solutions for built‐environment professionals who are trying to balance density and wellbeing in planning and design.
