This volume offers a cross section of current directions in the broad field of music analysis as practiced by a transnational community of scholars. Music analysis is presented as a vibrant multi-faceted field of research which constantly re-examines its own postulates, while also establishing dialogues with a large number of other disciplines. The papers in this essay collection were originally presented at an international conference held at the University of Arts in Belgrade in May 2011 and were later expanded to full-length research articles. The conference drew considerable attention in the field of music-theoretical and musicological research and was attended by both well-established scholars (most notably Marta Grabocz and William E. Caplin) and younger scholars from all over the world. The papers focus on narrative theory, analytical approaches to music from the Middle Ages to Modernity, music cognition and perception, music paleography, music and theatre, and other research areas. All papers are of highest international quality and contain original research, often resulting in either expanded or new methodologies. This book, which shows excellent editorial work and includes useful bibliographies at the end of each chapter, makes outstanding contributions to music scholarship and will be of highest value to scholars of numerous research areas.- Nico Schuler, Ph.D.,Professor of Music Theory & Musicology, Texas State University.
