Summary The planned shopping centre is one of the most widely studied forms of land development, yet comparatively little empirical research has addressed the issue of tenant placement, the relative location of retail outlets within centres. In an attempt to increase our understanding of placement issues, a week long observation study of 250 shopping groups was undertaken in a suburban district centre. Amongst other things, this revealed that shopper circulation tends to be limited to a small section of the mall. In addition, the key customer attracting role of the magnet stores was highlighted, as were the benefits to be gained from locating compatible outlets in close spatial proximity.
