This chapter argues that to avoid the pitfalls and reap the benefits of a diverse workforce, employers need to adopt a broader vision of inclusion —a vision that includes not only the organization itself but also its surrounding community and its national and international context. It provides a description of the inclusive workplace model, highlighting the role of community and society as stakeholders. The chapter then proposes a three-stage continuum of practices that takes inclusion beyond the proverbial corporate walls—from corporate philanthropy through corporate social responsibility (CSR) to corporate inclusion strategy—treating the community and wider society as true stakeholders. Finally, it demonstrates these policies and practices through case studies, outlining the benefits and obstacles of the expanded scope of inclusion practices and providing implications for corporate strategic vision.
