After reviewing the most common terms used when referring to the press cartoons in Spain, Portugal and the\nLatin America, the use of the term "viñeta" is proposed and a definition is suggested as a necessary step for\nfurther comments. The role of the cartoons in the critical analysis of reality is then discussed, both in the\neveryday journalistic activity and in determined historical periods such as the Spanish political transition. The\nplace of the cartoons among the journalistic genres -and specifically among opinion genres- is then\nanalysed. After reviewing their possibilities as editorial articles, we defend their equivalency to opinion\ncolumns. We base our arguments both in our own experience in this field and in the comments of\ncartoonists, scholars and journalists, already published elsewhere or collected for this article.
