This chapter presents an analysis of an essay on the social history of medicine. It describes the development at the University of Manchester's Centre for the History of Science, Technology and Medicine during the period from 1984 to 1988 and highlights the focus on history writing in the interpretation of the past. It argues that the prospect of the end of the social history of medicine does not involve a return to what was lost when the social got re-theorized and framed, but rather a return to a different kind of post-structural political understanding of the phenomenon that is medicine.
