(VA) Using data from a nationally representative survey (1998 REPONSE survey), we examine the relationship between the presence of trade unions and corporate financial performance in the French context. The findings suggest that trade union presence has no impact on financial performance. Furthermore, no significant union rent was evident even when the workplace faced few or no competitors in their main product market. The earlier US and UK literature found unions had a negative impact on financial performance. Our results are different and most likely reflect the specificity of French industrial relations.
