Only a very few human geographers nowadays would lay claim to being ‘regional geographers’, and in quite recent times regional geography has been described as if it was in need of exhumation rather than resuscitation. Even worse, it has sometimes seemed as though it has become an acceptable form of professional nostalgia, conjuring up memories of a golden age, now (thankfully) defunct. Yet in the last few years regional geography has made something of a comeback. A flurry of publications and projects have put regional synthesis back on the map (Gregory, 1978; Gilbert, 1988; Pudup, 1988; Sayer, 1989; Thrift, 1983, 1990b, 1991, 1993).
