This paper investigates the question by first looking at the history of gender use in popular EFL textbooks from the sixties through to the nineties. It then goes on to show what differences there are in the speech patterns between female and male participants focusing on mixed sex conversations. It examines firstness in relation to gender biasness and finally applies Sinclair and Coulthard’s analysis of discourse, IRF to the transcripts in the text to research if one gender is dominant in these conversations.
