This chapter discusses the possibility of using mobile communication devices for activity and travel surveys. When a mobile communication device with a local positioning function is given to individuals participating in travel and activity survey, it is possible to monitor their behavior without using a complicated questionnaire sheet and this is similar to the measurement made in animal behavior or psychology studies. The chapter describes how mobile communication devices make it possible to obtain travel and activity data from external measurements. It describes how a pilot survey was conducted in Osaka, Japan and it presents the results and briefly discusses future directions.
