Can we ever obtain the data we would like to have?

Abstract

The increasing sophistication of the models used to describe travel behaviour raises the question, if the data needed to drive such models can ever be obtained on a large scale.The paper will discuss the interaction between the available and conceivable future models and our ability to collect data on human behaviour by observation and selfreport in the laboratory and in the field.The paper will have the following structure: a discussion of our current understanding of the activity stream and its structure followed by a description of the approaches used to capture the activity stream in the laboratory and in the field.A discussion of the current modelling approaches and their development directions, in particular in the area of activity scheduling, is then contrasted with the existing data limitations.The final section will try to outline future research needs in both modelling and data collection.
