Developments in activity based modelling have led to an increased interest in collecting data of decision processes that underlie the organization of activities in time and space. The paper describes the overall strategy for the data collection in two in-depth panel surveys, one in the Toronto region and the other in Quebec City. The surveys were undertaken to help specify the household travel behavior sub-models. The methods used in the two surveys are, OPFAST, a package developed and implemented in a longitudinal panel survey in Quebec City, and CHASE, a complementary method in an overall strategy involving a parallel panel survey in Toronto. The results show that there is a case for combined strategies using both CHASE and OPFAST.
