The Origins of Culture

Abstract

The Origins of Culture by Edward Burnett Tylor, a foundational work in anthropology, explores the development of human culture from primitive to modern stages. Tylor introduces the concept of cultural evolution, arguing that societies progress through universal stages of savagery, barbarism, and civilization. He emphasizes the importance of studying myths, rituals, and social institutions to understand cultural similarities across different societies, attributing these to the "psychic unity" of mankind. Tylor also discusses animism as the earliest form of religious belief, tracing its evolution into more complex systems. His comparative method and focus on cultural survivals—practices that persist despite societal changes—laid the groundwork for modern anthropological research, establishing him as a pioneer in the field.
