Literature surrounding the issue of violent actions directed toward social workers is examined with an emphasis on the interdependent roles of clients, social workers, and social work administrators. The role of legislators in developing policies aimed at preventing client violence against social workers within this framework is also delineated. Emphasis is placed on addressing this issue on multiple levels rather than adopting a traditional “blame” approach that places primary responsibility on the worker while drawing attention away from agency liability. Five specific recommendations are offered to guide the development of effective prevention policies.
