This article brings into evidence the centrality given lately to the educational role of the science museums as well as a change on the education concept over the years, based upon formulations produced at international forums and by scientists from different backgrounds. Parallel to challenges introduced by late cultural displacements, it is shown that an institutional engagement as public services compromised with permanent education has increasingly taken place among these museums. Also, it is verified how these institutions are seeking new alternatives to improve the communication with the public, parting away with the traditional knowledge transmission models. Finally, we present some remaining challenges to consolidate the role of the science museums as sites of citizenship construction.
