IDM Supervision: An Integrated Developmental Model for Supervising Counselors and Therapists

Abstract

In IDM Supervision, the authors expand on their original version of the widely praised Integrated Developmental Model (IDM) of supervision. As the book reveals, IDM is a proven, adaptable model for supervising therapists at all levels of experience across disciplines and therapeutic orientations. Completely revised and updated, IDM Supervision is based on the authors' most current research. It outlines specific approaches, interventions, and techniques most appropriate for each stage of the three levels of development across the overriding structures: Self and Other Awareness, Motivation, and Autonomy. IDM Supervision reveals how to apply the developmental theory through every step of the supervision process and offers illustrative case material. The authors give supervisors guidance for creating an environment that encourages continued growth, including essential information on setting up sessions and forming initial assessments of competence. Comprehensive in scope, IDM Supervision also explores how issues of diversity can affect the supervisory relationship and offers a thoughtful analysis of the ethical and legal issues that inform the supervision process in clinical settings.
