This dissertation discusses the Singalovada suttanta, a \ntext which is part of the Pali Canon and variants of which \nare also found in the Mahayana corpus. The Pali Text \nSociety edition of this text is translated into both English \nand Afrikaans, and its place within the greater scheme of \nBuddhist religious philosophy and canonical literature is \nexamined. The text is also checked for internal coherence \nand for variation between its different versions. \nIt is shown how the ethical principles and practices that are \nexpounded in the singalovada Suttanta can be applied to \nlife in a modern society, and what this implies for the \nrelationship between contemporary society, philosophy, \nreligion and ethics generally
