One of the limitations ascribed traditionally to the Likert-scale is that the relative weight of each one of the items it is constructed upon is considered to be exactly the same, although this doesn’t have to be so necessarily, and in reality it usually isn’t so. In the contrary, the Thurstone-scale assigns a relative value that is different for each item, but its validation is carried out by a group of judges and not by the population that is the object of investigation. The proposed methodological innovation is based on the ponderation of the different values ascribed to each item in accordance to the relative weight they receive by a group of judges and that are validated later by the population itself. In other words, it would be a method to construct scales of measurement of social attitudes based on a combination of the techniques of Likert and Thurstone.
