In Germany, research about the influence of PR on journalism (determination research), has a comparatively long tradition. Underlying the majority of studies is an explicit normative understanding of the value of independent journalism for democracy. This is especially true for political journalism. However, the ever-growing behind-the-scenes activities of spindoctors and political PR are becoming more and more important and influential. This chapter provides a critical synopsis of German determination research and of current research on the interplay between political PR and media coverage on politics.
