ABSTRACT Recent studies in Latin America regarding national identity are reviewed. These have been organized in three categories: those that consider identity as reflecting objective, or at least externally identifiable categories; those that take it as subjective images or stereotypes; and finally those that take identity as an intersubjective identification with a national category or some of its elements. Consideration is also given to the processes of acculturation or assimilation of Hispanic populations in the USA, and to the societal processes of modernization or cosmopolitation. The studies reviewed have been carried out in Mexico, Cuba, Puerto Rico, El Salvador, Venezuela, Peru, Chile, Argentina, and the U.S.A.
