This paper provides: (1) a discussion of the need for reallocation of resources such that recently developed methods of assessing brain function are made more readily available to psychiatric patients; (2) a brief review of the research supporting the implementation of that reallocation, with an emphasis on problems associated with the neuropsychological heterogeneity of several psychiatric disorders and with relating neuropsychological test findings to psychiatric diagnoses; and (3) suggestions regarding the manner in which the role of clinical neuropsychology in psychiatric settings is changing from an emphasis on detection of structural brain damage in psychiatric patients to elicitation of brain-behavior relationships associated with various forms of psychopathology. It is proposed that advances in finding these relationships should ultimately aid in prevention of psychopathology, prognosis formulation, and rehabilitation planning. A case is made for the desirability of having neuropsychologists engage in interdisciplinary activity with neuroscientists and rehabilitation specialists aimed at achieving these goals.
