The author points out how family art therapy can be integrated into the systemic theoretical approach to family therapy, and supports the thesis that the use of creativity produces positive interactions in family therapy. Key theoretical principles of systemic family work described by the author are: the family as a system; positive connotation through art process; prescribing the symptom; utilizing the metaphor; family ritual; paradoxical interventions; the therapeutic double bind; homeostasis; and the termination of treatment. Three condensed case studies are presented in which techniques are highlighted, such as circular causality versus linear causality, forming a hypothesis, assessment of compliancy, and recursive patterned behavior and interventions.
