Ben Jonson wrote The Alchemist to be performed by the King's Men at the Blackfriars private playhouse. In the context of the physical situation of London's public and private theaters in 1610, Jonson expected the audience to correlate the rivalry between the inner-City trickster, Face, and the outer-City rogues, Subtle and Dol Common, with the proficiency of the King's Men's performances and the company's ascendancy in their new private playhouse over all of the other adult playing companies associated solely with the public theaters located outside the City walls of London.
