We implemented in vivo instruction consisting of a constant time‐delay procedure used in combination with multiple exemplars of strangers, lures, supervisors, and sites to teach three adults with severe mental handicaps a generalized response to the lures of strangers. Each of the participants acquired the response during training sessions as a result of the intervention package, but transfer of the response to probe trials was inconsistent and mixed. Only one participant consistently generalized to the probe condition, which included novel exemplars of lures, strangers, and settings. In addition, only one participant performed the correct response during social validity probes. We attempted to follow practices that have been effective in producing generalized responding; however, the results suggest that limitations exist in the current technology with this population. It is hoped that the outcome of this investigation will serve to generate future directions for research in the facilitation of generalization.
