Urban development and urban form have long been the subject of controversial discussions in regional science and urban planning. This is particularly true for suburbanisation. Judging from the severe problems that accompanied the movement of people, jobs and infrastructure out of core cities, many call for abandoning suburbanisation. This criticism is bundled in the term “Zersiedelung” which evaluates suburbs as being chaotic and un-coordinated. The term is also expected to give an orientation for the cities of tomorrow. In this context, the paper asks if “Zersiedelung” keeps its promise and discusses if the term is based on a proper judgement or is more due to a particular kind of social construction.
