MAP GRIDDING AND CARTOGRAPHIC ERRORS / A RECURRENT ARGUMENT

Abstract

The arbitrary procedure of subdividing geographical territories has been the source of many errors in statistical cartography and computer mapping. Spatially ordered data are usually required for geographical analysis and to facilitate the automatic preparation of statistical maps. The necessary transfer of data from irregular administrative units to a grid system of subdivisions, however, involves cartographic errors. Mismatch areas between the true map and its gridded representation are related to grid resolution and grid position. Several authors have given varied analytical forms for the cartographic error function. In the example map used in this study, the total map error is shown to be linearly related to grid resolution and statistically independent of grid position; the mismatch between true map and gridded map does not vary significantly whether the grid is translated or rotated.La methode arbitraire de subdivision des territoires geographiques a donne lieu a de nombreuses erreurs dans la cartographie statistique et la cartographie automatique. Les donnees disposees en ordre spatial sont habituellement necessaires a l'analyse geographique et facilitent la preparation automatique des cartes statistiques. Toutefois, le fait de reporter des donnees provenant d'un decoupage administratif irregulier sur un quadrillage comporte des erreurs cartographiques. Les zones de non-coincidence entre la carte veritable et sa representation quadrillee sont liees a la resolution du quadrillage et a la position des points. De nombreux auteurs ont donne diverses formes analytiques a la fonction de l'erreur cartographique. Dans la carte qui sert d'exemple dans cette etude, on montre que l'erreur graphique est une fonction lineaire de la resolution du quadrillage et est statistiquement independante de la position des points. La disparite entre la carte veritable et la carte quadrillee ne varie pas notablement, que l'on imprime au quadrillage un mouvement de translation ou de rotation.
