The respective influence of orthographic redundancy (Seidenberg, 1987 Seidenberg, M. 1987. “Sublexical structures in visual word recognition: Access units or orthographic redundancy?”. In Attention and performance XII: The psychology of reading, Edited by: Coltheart, M. Hillsdale, NJ: Lawrence Erlbaum Associates, Inc. [Google Scholar]) and syllable boundaries (Rapp, 1992 Rapp, B. 1992. The nature of sublexical orthographic organization: The bigram trough hypothesis examined. Journal of Memory and Language, 31: 33–53. [Crossref], [Web of Science ®] , [Google Scholar]) on reading units in French was tested in three experiments, using the illusory conjunction paradigm (Prinzmetal, Treiman, & Rho, 1986). Bigram boundaries were defined according to bigram frequencies. The data showed that the syllable effect was attenuated or cancelled when syllable boundaries did not coincide with bigram boundaries. Reading units were defined by syllable and orthographic information. The implications of such findings for the dual route theory and the PDP model are discussed.
