The idea of the university has undergone significant change in recent years, particularly with the widening of access to a greater range of socio-economic groups, the greater internationalisation of university provision which extends beyond exchange schemes, and the recruitment of student populations from overseas to partnerships and franchising agreements between institutions. Those pressures for high volumes of activity may be accentuated by the emergence of new competitor institutions: the ‘business’ university in which industrial organisations use their expertise to compete with traditional universities and the ‘virtual’ university with the burgeoning interest in internet-based learning. These factors are changing the landscape of university education and forcing the pace of change within traditional universities in a manner which accentuates the visibility of accounting and performance management (Lapsley, 2003). The two particular dimensions of these changes which are discussed here are (1) calculative practices and the individual (2) organisational forms and change.
